Privacy notice
This notice explains what personal information we collect when you take part in Flourishing in Diversity, a course run by Language Gateways, and how we look after it.
Who we are
Language Gateways is run by Zipf (Jersey) Ltd, a company based in Jersey, Channel Islands. Zipf (Jersey) Ltd is the data controller for the information described here, under the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018.

What we collect
- Invitation details given to us by your church: your email address, your church and course group, and, if provided, your name, your mother tongue and any other languages you speak.
- Account details: your email address and a password (stored only in scrambled form, so we can’t read it). If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your name and email address; we don’t get your Google password.
- Profile details you add or correct: your name, mother tongue and other languages.
- What you do on the site: which parts of the course you have read, watched or listened to, and any notes or comments you write.
- Session recordings: course sessions, including table discussions, may be audio or video recorded. You will be told at the start of a session when recording is taking place.
We don’t ask about your religious background, age, address or other sensitive details.
How we use it
- To make sure only invited people can use the course site, and to let you sign in.
- To show you the course, remember where you got to, and keep your notes and comments.
- To understand the mix of languages in each group, so the course can draw on it.
- To turn session recordings into course materials: write-ups, summaries and quotes. Recordings are transcribed on our own computer, not by an online service.
- To email you about your account (for example, to confirm your address or reset your password).
We use this information because it is needed to run the course you have joined, which is in our legitimate interests and yours. Where we rely on your agreement (for example, to share a quote from you beyond your own church), you can withdraw it at any time.
Who can see what
- Your profile is visible only to you and to the course administrators.
- Your notes and comments are visible to the people you choose: only you, your church’s group, or everyone on the course. You can post comments anonymously. Anything shared beyond your own church is checked by us first.
- In course materials, everyone except the course leader, Tim F Nash, is anonymous. Discussion tables are numbered, not named. We may say which church a session was held at.
- Raw recordings and full transcripts are kept privately and are not published.
We never sell your information or use it for advertising.
Services we use
We use these companies to run the site. They handle your information only on our instructions:
- Supabase: accounts and the course database, stored in London, UK.
- GitHub Pages: hosts the website’s pages (it sees your browser’s IP address when you visit).
- Resend: sends account emails.
- Google: only if you choose to sign in with Google.
- YouTube: plays course videos embedded in the site.
Some of these companies are based in the United States. Where your information is handled outside Jersey, the UK or the European Economic Area, we rely on the safeguards those companies provide, such as standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
We keep your account, profile, notes, comments and session recordings for two years after your course ends, then delete them. Anonymised course materials (with no names in them) may be kept and used in future runs of the course. You can ask us to delete your account sooner.
Cookies
The site doesn’t use advertising or tracking cookies. It stores a sign-in token in your browser so you stay signed in; signing out removes it.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the information we hold about you;
- correct anything that’s wrong (you can also edit your profile yourself);
- delete your information, or stop using it for a particular purpose;
- give you your information in a form you can take elsewhere.
Email courses@languagegateways.com and we will reply within four weeks. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner.
Changes
If we change this notice, we’ll update the date at the top and tell you about any important changes.
